Turkish Airlines Cancellation Policy and Refund Policy

Turkish Airlines or officially known as Türk Hava Yolları Anonim Ortaklığı, the national airline of Turkey was established in 1933. The airline offers flights to 271 destinations in 5 continents including Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North America, and South America. It is also the largest mainline carrier in the world in terms of passengers carried.  In terms of the total number of destinations covered, it ranks as the fourth-largest carrier in the globe. Turkish Airlines has a fleet of 340 passenger aircraft made up of Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer models.

Cancellation Policy of Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines cancellation policy and cancellation allows passengers to have flexibility while travelling. However, there are few regulations that passengers should abide by in case of cancellation to receive refunds. 

• Passengers can cancel the ticket and claim only if the ticket has been purchased from the official channels of the airlines. 
• Refunds are only applicable on refundable tickets. 
• If a passenger cancels a non-refundable ticket then only the tax component will be refunded. Also, in non-refundable tickets, passengers have to pay an additional cancellation fee as per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy.
•  If the passenger cancels the reservation with a connecting flight after completing one leg of the journey, then applicable refund will be subjected to the cost of flight taken and additional Turkish Airlines cancellation charges.
• The Turkish Airlines Penalty fee cannot be refunded, under any circumstances. 
• Some reservations are not permitted for cancellation and in that case, passengers can change their itinerary. Turkish Airlines offers future travel credit, promotional fares, free gifted vouchers etc. 
• Passengers are not allowed for flight cancellation after booking Turkish Airline pet service. 
• Tickets with restricted fares are not eligible for monetary  refund after booking. However, passengers can claim the refund in the form of a travel voucher as per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy. 
• In certain situations of cancellation, the airline can retain the value of the ticket as future travel credit which can be used to travel for new bookings. The travel credit is only valid till 365 days after the issuance.
• Under the Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, In case of voluntary flight cancellation by the airline, passengers are entitled for refund if the passenger refuses to take the alternate flight provided by the airline.  

These clauses of cancellation policy are applicable on the restricted as well as non-restricted fare, irrespective of fare type or cabin class booked.

Cancellation Policy for Award Flight in Turkish Airlines

Passengers who have redeemed points to purchase award flights have to abide by a different cancellation policy curated just for award flight. 

• Passengers can cancel their reservation booked under the Miles&smiles program at any time on the airline’s website.
• No cancellation of award flights will be permitted 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure as per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy. 
• To cancel the award flight, passengers have to pay the cancellation fee  after which the reward points will be reinstated back to the accounts of the holder. 
• The cancellation of an award flight is subject to a cancellation fee which can be $300 depending on the destination.
• The 24-hour cancellation policy does not apply to award flights.

24-hour Cancellation Policy in Turkish Airlines

Passengers can cancel their flight within 24-hours of booking without any cancellation fee given that the booking was being made 7 days prior to the actual departure. 

• Passengers can claim full refund in case of 24-hours cancellation under the Turkish Airlines 24 hour cancellation. 
• This policy however does not apply to the bookings made under Miles&Smiles program. 
• The 24-hour cancellation policy does not cover eGifts certificates, travel credit vouchers or electronic vouchers.

No-Show Cancellation Policy in Turkish Airlines

If somehow you miss your flight and the airline considers your ticket as a no-show then you must check this policy. 

• The Turkish Airline no show policy applies to every fare type and cabin class. 
• If the passenger wants to retain the travel fund, they need to inform the airline beforehand. 
• In case of no-show, the airline will only refund the taxes and airport taxes as refund as per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy. 
• The no show depends on different fare rules and cabin class. The rules may include, a no show fee and a change fee after no show, a no show-fee and cancellation fee after no show.

Cancellation Policy for Business Class in Turkish Airlines

The Turkish Airlines cancellation policy in business class depends on the fare type of the ticket. In business class, you have promotional, restricted and Flexible fare types.

Promotional

• The ticket cancellation is not permitted in this fare type, and in case of cancellation and refund, only the refundable taxes will be converted into future travel credit.
• In case of no show, no refund will be permitted under Turkish Airlines cancellation policy. The remaining value of the original flight after deduction of cancellation fee can be used to book a new flight.

Restricted

• As per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, passengers can request to cancel their flight before scheduled departure. 
• After the departure, any cancellation under no show will be not permitted for refund. The value of the fare after the specific cancellation fee can be reused to book a new flight. 
• After the scheduled departure, any cancellation refund will be equivalent to the cost of the flight taken dedicated from the actual cost of the flight.

Flexible

• No refund will be applicable for refund in case of Turkish Airlines cancellation charges.
• No cancellation is allowed in the flexible fare less than 1 hour before the scheduled departure. 
• In case of no show, only the refundable taxes and airport taxes will be returned.

Economy Class Cancellation Policy in Turkish Airlines

Just like business class, economy fare also has distinct fare types like promotional, restricted and flexible.

Promotional Fare

• As per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, no cancellation is permitted on this cabin class. Only taxes will be refunded in the form of travel credit and can be used to book a new flight. 
• In case of no-show, no cancellation of refund will be permitted after departure of the flight.

Restricted Fare

• As per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, passengers can request to cancel their flight before scheduled departure. 
• After the departure, any cancellation under no show will be not permitted for refund. 
• After the scheduled departure, any cancellation refund will be equivalent to the cost of the flight taken dedicated from the actual cost of the flight.

Flexible Fare

• No refund will be applicable for refund in case of Turkish Airlines cancellation charges.
• After the departure, any cancellation under no show will be not permitted for refund. .

Cancellation Fee

In most cases, the airline can charge Turkish Airlines cancellation fees in case passengers want to cancel their bookings. However, the cancellation fees depend on various factors like type of ticket, reversal timing, time left between the departure and cancellation and destination. Passengers can avoid cancellation fee only if they cancel the reservation within 24 hours of booking the reservation given that it has been made 7 days prior to scheduled departure. 

• In case a passenger fails to cancel their flight within the risk-free 24 hours, then the passenger has to pay cancellation fee as per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy 
• Restricted fare travellers have to pay $400 as Turkish Airlines ticket cancellation charges. 
• Passengers with flexible fare tickets don’t have to pay any Turkish Airlines cancellation fee.
• The airlines can take 40% of the value of the ticket in case the reservation has been cancelled within one to twelve hours of the planned reservation departure. 
• In case, the passenger cancels the reservation before 12 hours of departure, then passengers are likely to pay 20% of the reservation value.

Cancellation Fee for Award Flights

• As per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, the cancellation fee for cancelling domestic award flights can cost up to TRY(Turkish Lira) 50  and international award flights can cost $25. 
• In case of no-show, the passengers have to pay $100 for domestic and regional flights while for international flights, passengers have to pay $50.

Turkish Airlines Cancelled Flights Policy

There are circumstances when airlines have to cancel their flights voluntarily. Due to extreme weather conditions, technical difficulties, overbooking, security screening, or even clearance issues from ATC can lead to flight cancellation. Thus, airlines offer compensation to passengers. 

• As per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, if a passenger’s flight has been cancelled and the airline provides an alternate flight but passengers reach their destination more than 3 hours later than the passenger is eligible to claim $700 as compensation. 
• Flights to/from Europe are under the EU261 policy which ensure compensation to passengers depending on the distance and delay.

Turkish Airlines Refund Policy

• As per Turkish Airlines cancellation policy, passengers can get full refund only if they cancel their reservation within 24 of booking given that the booking has been made 7 days prior to scheduled departure. 
• The airline usually credits the value of the refund to the passenger’s wallet within 20 days after the verification of refund only if the payment has been done in cash. 
• According to the Turkish airlines cancel flight policy, if the payment has been done via credit card then the airline will credit the refund within 7 working days. 
• Owing to the airline’s cancellation policy, the passenger can claim a travel voucher under the same currency of the purchased ticket as per Turkish airline cancellation policy.

How to Cancel Turkish Airlines?

Online Method

• Go to the Turkish Airlines  official website. 
• Look for the “Manage Booking” tab on the homepage
• Click on it to proceed with your reservation information including last name, and book reference number and ticket number.
• Once adding necessary information, click on proceed to retrieve your booking details. 
• Cancel the booking and pay the cancellation fee needed. 
• Lastly, you will receive the confirmation of cancellation via email.

Through Mobile App

• Install the official Turkish Airlines app from the Google (Android) or Apple (IOS) app store. 
• Open the app and login in using your Turkish Airlines credentials. 
• Once logged in, navigate to find the “Manage Booking” tab to access the flight booking. 
• Then add your booking details to retrieve the reservation. 
• Cancel the booking and pay the cancellation fees needed. 
• Lastly, you will receive the confirmation of cancellation via email.

Customer Service

1. Dial change flight or customer care number of the airline to initiate 
2. Provide the airline representative with your reservation details consisting of booking ID and ticket number and last name. 
3. After your input, the representative will proceed with the flight cancellation. 
4. If required, pay the cancellation fee and get a confirmed cancellation email.
